Device failure may predispose infant to bronchospasm, inspissated secretions, and airway obstruction, as well as inadvertent positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), circuit obstruction, or accidental lavage of pooled fluid into the airway, elevated oxygen consumption, and worsening respiratory distress.
